Director of Music (Open)

Part-time: Approximately 38-40 weeks/year; 12-14 hrs/week

Reports to: Senior Minister

Job Summary:

To develop and lead the worship music ministry for the Unitarian Church of Harrisburg (UCH), in a way that is consistent with the mission of UCH and with Unitarian Universalist (UU) values.

Essential Functions:
  • Coordinate and oversee the music ministry of UCH, maintaining a strong music program at Sunday worship services
  • Participate in the creative planning of the Sunday worship services with the Minister, Worship Team, and other worship leaders
  • Coordinate with minister, other music staff, and lay worship leaders re: planning other church programs involving music (Christmas Eve, any joint worships, special events)
  • Recruit, equip, motivate, and supervise and shepherd choir members and instrumental musicians
  • Direct choir for worship services, choir rehearsals, and special events
  • Serve as pianist when pianist is off or unable to play, plus related choir rehearsals and other relevant occasions
  • Maintains musical instruments and music library
  • Purchase music and supplies, per budgetary limits
  • Communicate with the Minister, staff, and members
Other Responsibilities:
  • Provide music, when available, and for an additional honorarium, for weddings, funerals, memorial services, and interfaith events. When unavailable, provide referrals to other musicians.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Read music, play piano, and direct choir
  • Ability to organize, coordinate, and motivate volunteer musicians
  • Willingness to commit to UCH's vision, values, leadership, and people
Job Task List:
  • Meet with Minister monthly to plan services (hymns, choir music, special music, and worship in general)
  • Attend monthly Ministry Team meeting (with Minister and Director of Religious Exploration)
  • Plan and direct choir practice each week (1.5 – 2 hours)
  • Participate in monthly worship team meeting
  • Submit monthly reports to minister
  • Submit annual report to congregation
  • Suggest variations or new ideas to Minister
  • Find music appropriate to the choir's abilities and topics for each Sunday's theme as listed in the liturgical calendar for UCH. Music could be both new or come from the existing music library. Music should come from a wide variety of sources (choral, pop, folk, rounds, chants, simple dances, drumming, multicultural pieces, etc.)
  • Provide appropriate music for occasional multigenerational services
  • Supervise accompanist and meet regularly
  • Creatively use music to celebrate specific events
  • Support and encourage congregational singing and participation
  • Encourage and recruit guest musicians and find places to use their unique talents
  • Maintain music inventory
  • Manage musical instrument maintenance
  • Periodically recruit choir members
  • Order music supplies as needed
