Leland Nelson – 1992

Delaware State University, Accounting

Leland Nelson has enjoyed a rewarding career since earning his college degree. He now holds a master’s degree in business administration from The Pennsylvania State University. He has worked with the Big 4 accounting and advisory firm, KPMG, and founded several small businesses, including Dirty Dog Hauling, a professional junk removal company, and Think Tank Consulting, a management consulting firm. Additionally, he has fostered youth-student job internship connections through the Harrisburg School District.

Since 2008, Leland has served as the elementary wrestling coach for the Harrisburg Cougars and is the treasurer of the Central PA Wrestling Association. He is an active contributor to the Harrisburg community, serving as President of the African American Chamber of Commerce of Central PA and participating on several advisory boards.

Reflecting on the impact of the LaGrone scholarship on his life, Leland fondly recalls his mentorship-turned-friendship with accountant Joan Hellmann. “Joan always made herself available when I reached out to her and provided the mentorship I needed to make my career dreams tangible,” he commented in 2024.

When Leland received the 1992 award, he was the first LaGrone Scholar of the revitalized scholarship program. In the church foyer, Leland Nelson stood on one side of LaGrone’s bust of Harriet Tubman, sculptor Oliver LaGrone on the other. Two football players of lyrical spirit, active givers, men of thought, men of action.
