Living Our Values

As Unitarian Universalists, we have a legacy of “deeds not creeds.” Our work for a better world calls us to unexpected places as we harness love’s power to stop oppression. From grassroots community organizing to interfaith state, national, and corporate advocacy; in protest marches, prayer vigils, and press conferences; in homeless shelters and in prisons, Unitarian Universalists put our faith into action.

Our justice efforts are grounded in our congregationally-driven social justice statements and our call to break down divisions, heal isolation, and honor the interconnectedness of all life and all justice issues. We model these commitments by creating just, welcoming, and inclusive congregations. We act in partnership with groups and communities most impacted by injustice on local, state, national, and international levels.

Harbor a Haitian harrisburg

Harbor a Haitian Harrisburg is a group of members of the Unitarian Church of Harrisburg that have been supporting a young man and his family through a dire humanitarian crisis in Haiti over the past few months. In an effort to raise awareness and funds for this family, we invite you to review the campaign we have created with the aid of the FaithifyUU team. FaithifyUU is a crowdfunding platform supported by the UUA.

Wendjy, a 24-year-old man from Port-au-Prince, Haiti, takes care of his mother and two younger brothers amid the city’s deteriorating conditions marked by gang violence and economic hardships. Forced to flee their home due to escalating violence, they now live in a small storage room. Loss of income has left them struggling for basic necessities like food, water and medical attention.

Hope for a better future lies in the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service’s Humanitarian Parole program – a program intended to expedite requests for resettlement in the USA. A sponsor from the church is currently helping Wendjy through the process.

Immediate needs include funds for essentials, while long-term goals involve supporting Wendjy’s journey to the USA, aiding his family in Haiti, and eventually bringing them here to join him.

Wendjy’s resilience and dedication to his family highlight their deservingness of support for a chance at a better life.

UUJPA teams include: good government, climate change, economic justice, reproductive justice, criminal justice reform, gun violence prevention, and LGBTQ+ justice. UUJPA team meetings are held monthly on zoom.

Partners include: March on Harrisburg (anti-corruption), Education Voters, Citizens Climate Lobby, Religious Coalition for Reproductive Justice, Fair Districts PA, Better Path Coalition, Poor Peoples Campaign, and Dauphin County Bail Team.

Adopt a Highway

UCH volunteers pick up litter through a stretch of Lindle Road near the church. They do so three times a year, with PennDOT supplying bags, vests, and gloves.
